Creativity… or the subtle innovative approach to how a presentation is made on a résumé is what makes the difference. Another way to put it… STYLE. Style is made up of interesting points, thought provoking statements and fluid sentence structure that makes for a good read. Style is the key that unlocks the door to getting a call for an interview. You know it when you see it. And so does the boss you want to impress.
When used to compliment good credentials, style adds a new dimension to a résumé, one that separates it from a boring archaic informative document, commonly referred to as a commonplace list of duties and responsibilities. A commonplace résumé is an also-ran résumé.
Note these features of an also-ran résumé:
Blur The résumé lacks focus.
Strained The writing feels forced, unnatural or exaggerated.
Redundancy Events, duties, responsibilities and skills keep repeating themselves with only slightly different twists.
Unenlightening Too much informative, expository description of duties and responsibilities and don’t highlight accomplishments or achievements or character.
Superlatives Excellent, superb, fantastic, outstanding, glorious, magnificent, are determinations for the hiring manager to make, not the over-indulgent candidate. Résumé with sentences slathered with these bloated words are unrealistic and will put off the reader. Hard to Follow A Résumé with confusion will almost inevitably lead to an immediate dismissal. The reader will quickly become frustrated, resenting the writer for not taking the time to clarify the summarization, format, focus, or objective.
More-or-less There is a cold graveyard full of résumés filled with inaccuracies and over generalizations. ≈
